Attic Insulation and SEAI Grants: What Irish Homeowners Need to Know
Attic insulation
In Ireland, as much as 30% of a home’s heat can escape through an uninsulated attic. That means you’re paying to heat air that’s literally rising and disappearing through the roof. Fortunately, properly installed attic or rafter insulation can dramatically reduce this heat loss.
Attic insulation involves placing insulating material between and/or over ceiling joists to create a thermal barrier. Rafter insulation, meanwhile, is fixed between the sloping timbers of the roof and is often used when the attic space is converted into a living area. The SEAI have guidance on Attic and Rafter Insulation available here – A Homeowner’s Guide To Attic and Rafter Insulation.
SEAI Recomendation
The SEAI recommends 200–400mm of mineral wool or equivalent for optimal performance, avoiding compression of insulation to maintain effectiveness, ensuring water tanks and pipework are also insulated, and maintaining proper ventilation to prevent condensation. Insulation not only keeps warmth in during winter, but also helps keep your home cooler in summer—a win-win for comfort and cost.
SEAI offers grants of up to €1,500 for attic insulation, depending on the home type (apartment, mid-terrace, detached, etc.). These grants are part of the government’s commitment to improving energy efficiency in Irish homes. To qualify, your home must have been built and occupied before 2011, not already have sufficient insulation in the attic, and the upgrade must be completed by an SEAI-registered contractor, like Energlaze. It’s important to note: insulation upgrades are not available as single upgrade measures. They must be part of a multi-upgrade project.
SEAI Grants for Attic insulation
You can apply through the SEAI One Stop Shop service, where we manage everything—survey, grant paperwork, installation, and follow-up—so there’s no hassle on your end.
The benefits of attic insulation are clear: lower energy bills, reduced carbon footprint, improved comfort year-round, higher Building Energy Rating (BER), and quick installation with minimal disruption.
FAQ: Attic Insulation & SEAI Grants
Q1: How long does attic insulation last?
High-quality mineral wool insulation can last over 40 years if installed correctly and kept dry.
Q2: Can I insulate my attic myself and still claim the grant?
No. SEAI grants require the work to be carried out by registered contractors.
Q3: Is there a difference between attic and rafter insulation?
Yes. Attic insulation sits on the ceiling joists, while rafter insulation follows the roof slope, typically used in converted attic spaces.
Q4: Can I get both attic and wall insulation with an SEAI grant?
Yes – multiple upgrades can be covered through the SEAI’s One Stop Shop service.
Q5: Will I need to remove old insulation?
Not always. If existing insulation is in good condition, new layers can be added on top. Damaged or compressed insulation may need to be removed first.
With SEAI grants available and expert support from Energlaze, there’s never been a better time to insulate your attic. We’ll guide you from assessment to installation and help maximise your grant entitlement.
