What is a BER?

A BER Certificate is an indication of the energy performance of your home. It must be carried out by a registered BER assessor. Find further information on BERs.

Step 1: Decide What Measures Best Suit Your Home.

Once you have looked at the range of grants we offer you may wish to talk to a good building contractor, architect, BER Assessor or energy advisor. They should be able to advise on the measures best suited to your home.

Insulation and Heat Control grants – available to all homeowners of dwellings built and occupied before 2011.
Heat Pump Systems and Solar Thermal Grants – available to all homeowners of dwellings built and occupied before 2021.

Step 2: Choose A Registered Contractor

Your contractor must:

  • Be an SEAI Registered contractor such as Energlaze Home Energy Upgrades
  • Be registered for the type of work that they are carrying out
  • Put a contract for works in place with you before work begins – it is required that contractors have a written contract with homeowners for all measures undertaken under the Better Energy Homes scheme

Step 3: Apply For The Grant

Make sure that you read the Application Guide before applying for your grant.

Online Application

Fill out the online application on this site. You need the MPRN number from your electricity bill and the name of your Contractor from the SEAI register. You will be approved within minutes.

By Post

If you wish to apply by post, call 1850 927000 to have a form posted to you. Post your completed application form to:

Better Energy Homes Scheme
Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
P.O. Box 119
Cahirciveen
Co. Kerry

Step 4: Accept Your Grant Offer

If you applied online you should receive your grant offer immediately. If you applied by post you should receive your grant offer within 5 working days.

You then have 30 days to accept the offer. After this period you will have to re-apply.

Step 5: Get Paid

You will receive a form in the post called the Declaration of Works – one for each measure (e.g. one for external wall insulation, one for heating controls with gas boiler upgrade) which is filled in by you, by Energlaze and your BER assessor when the works and BER are completed. For payment, please submit your completed Declaration of Works form and your Request For Payment form to:

Better Energy Homes Scheme
Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland
P.O. Box 119
Cahirciveen
Co. Kerry

You will generally find your money in your bank account within four weeks.

Please note the following:

  • The SEAI cannot give extensions to grant offer periods. Grant applications for works done before or after the grant offer period are not eligible for payment.
  • Late forms are not eligible for payment and will result in grants being cancelled.
  • Incomplete or missing forms will result in your grant claim being rejected and all forms being returned to you. This may result in a delay and/or cancellation of your grant claim.
  • You are required to keep invoices and receipts for all completed works. You may be required to present them if we select your contractor for inspection.
  • Your contractor may be selected for inspection. This is to maintain a good standard of workmanship.
  • Contractors registered with the Better Energy Homes Programme have agreed to comply with the Code of Practice and Quality Assurance and Disciplinary Procedure and the Additional Information for Contractors.
  • SEAI accepts no liability or responsibility, whether for breach of contract, negligence or otherwise, in respect of any claim or cause of action arising out of, or in relation to, any equipment, material, work, system or installation in respect for which grant approval was given by SEAI. The fact of registration on the registered Contractors List for the Scheme does not infer any warranty or endorsement of that contractor by SEAI.
