The New BER Scale for 2026: What Irish Homeowners Need to Know

From May 2026, Ireland's Building Energy Rating (BER) system is changing. The updated scale is designed to make energy ratings easier to understand while aligning Ireland with European energy performance standards

What's Changing?

The current BER system includes multiple subcategories such as A1, A2, B1, B2 and C3. From May 2026, these sub-ratings will be removed and replaced with a simplified scale:

A0, A, B, C, D, E, F and G

The new A0 rating will recognise zero-emission buildings that achieve exceptional energy performance without relying on fossil fuels.

Why the BER Changes Matter

The simplified system will make it easier for homeowners, buyers and tenants to compare properties and understand their energy performance.

Future BER certificates will also provide more detailed information on:

  • Energy consumption
  • Carbon emissions
  • Renewable energy contribution
  • Recommended energy upgrades

As energy standards continue to rise, improving your home’s thermal performance becomes increasingly important.

Why the BER Changes Matter

The Role of Windows in BER Performance

Windows are one of the most significant factors affecting heat loss in Irish homes. Older single-glazed or inefficient double-glazed windows can allow substantial heat to escape, increasing heating costs and reducing overall comfort.

Upgrading to modern energy-efficient glazing can help:

  • Reduce heat loss
  • Improve indoor comfort
  • Lower energy bills
  • Enhance your BER rating
  • Reduce carbon emissions
  • Increase property value

At EnerGlaze, we provide advanced glazing solutions designed to maximise thermal efficiency and support homeowners looking to improve their home’s energy performance.

Will Existing BER Certificates Still Be Valid?

Yes. Existing BER certificates remain valid for up to 10 years from their issue date, unless significant renovation work is carried out that requires a new assessment.

However, homeowners planning renovations or energy upgrades should consider how improvements made today could contribute to a stronger BER rating under the new system.
