HEAT PUMP UPGRADE

Upgrade to a renewable heat pump with the help of a €6,500 SEAI grant

Heat pumps are an environmentally friendly and extremely efficient alternative to fossil fuels like oil, gas, solid fuel and conventional home heating systems. Air source heat pumps work by converting energy from the air outside of your home into useful heat inside, in the same way a fridge extracts heat from its inside. They are a major source of renewable energy for Irish homes, and will soon replace oil and gas boilers as the primary heating source for retrofitting older homes.

FAQ about heat pumps

If you can’t find the answer please contact us here or email us at [email protected]

What is a heat pump and how does it work?

Heat pumps are an energy efficient way to convert energy (the cold air outside your home) into heat inside your home, similar to how a fridge extracts heat from inside. Every unit of electricity used in the process yields roughly four units of heat for your home. In well insulated homes, heat pumps are inexpensive to run and a great alternative to fossil fuel based systems.

How it works

What is the grant for heat pumps and eligibility criteria?

The SEAI grant for heat pumps is €6,500 and your home must be built before 2021.

Are heat pumps costly to run?

No, if your home is sufficiently insulated and airtight, heat pumps are far more economical to run than traditional forms of heating such as oil and gas boilers.

Is a Heat Loss Indicator (HLI) needed to get the grant?

Yes. In order to get the grant an SEAI technical advisor must assess the fabric of the house to calculate the Heat Loss Indicator (HLI). The charge is €600 for a technical assessment. Homeowners can claim €200 of this back once they have successfully claimed the grant.

How can I improve the HLI (heat loss indicator) of a poorly performing home?

The technical BER report will outline the measures needed for each individual home. It is likely to include recommendations such as the installation of high performance glazing, new windows and doors and or insulation. The SEAI offers grants towards insulating your home (external wall wrapping, internal dry lining and cavity wall insulation).

Please note, that as you increase the insulating measures in your home, you are also making it more airtight. You will need a ventilation strategy for the home, which may sound contradictory, but air flow is extremely important in your home.

At the point of applying for a heat pump grant the homeowner is required to upload the Technical Assessment document detailing the home’s eligibility. A grant of €200 towards the cost of the technical BER is included in the heat pump grant after the works are carried out.
